Mi Fu: Style and the Art of Calligraphy in Northern Song China
Published in Hardcover by Yale Univ Pr (May, 1997)
Author: Peter Charles Sturman
Average review score:

I never knew Chinese calligraphy could be so fascinating.
This is a fabulous book that makes a difficult and exotic subject perfectly understandable. Mi Fu is one of the greatest artists in the world, but who in the West knows about an 11th century Chinese calligrapher? Sturman's sensitive and learned discussion brings it all alive. I loved this book!!!

Mister Got to Go: The Cat That Wouldn't Leave (Northern Lights Books for Children)
Published in Hardcover by Chronicle Books (March, 1995)
Authors: Lois Simmie and Cynthia Nugent
Average review score:

A warm tale for lovers of cats and the weather in Vancouver
An overwhelming sense of snugness and warmth pervades this rich tale of a streetwise feline that decides on a home. Anyone familiar with Vancouver will appreciate the lush, wet illustrations, and lovers of cats will recognize this headstrong little fellow. Despite Mister Foster's declarations that the cat "has got to go," there is, of course, only a feeble effort to make it so. Eventually, this erstwhile street urchin is the hero of the day, but only after an "altercation resulting in defenestration." The interloping raccoon is vanquished, and the trip to the vet's cements this cat's residency. I recently read my copy (which was published under the title "No Cats Allowed") to a class of 21 first graders. For the length of the entire reading, which was pushing it for their attention span, there was not a sound nor distraction. Any cat lover will appreciate the interplay with Mister Foster, and his dignified resignation to his fate. Highly recommended for a classroom read, or a rainy day under the comforter.

Mobilizing for Peace: Conflict Resolution in Northern Ireland, Israel/Palestine, and South Africa
Published in Hardcover by Oxford University Press (June, 2002)
Authors: Benjamin Gidron, Stanley Nider Katz, and Yeheskel Hasenfeld
Average review score:

Praise for Mobilizing for Peace
"Teams of researchers from three areas with longlasting conflicts--Israel, South Africa, and Northern Ireland--report on the role peace and conflict resolution organizations have played in the promotion of peace. The authors provide not only a considerate account of an era of initiatives to resolve a protracted conflict, but they have also successfully integrated for the first time literatures on social movements, non-governmental organizations, and civil society. A groundbreaking and unique project."

Bert Klandermans, Dept. of Socio-Cultural Sciences, Free University, Amsterdam

"Peace making is a virtuous circle. Ending intransigent conflict requires successful political negotiations, a continual commitment to non-violence, and the demonstration of new ways of living together. Professors Gidron, Katz and Hasenfeld provide the ground breaking analysis of how peace and conflict resolution organizations show conflict-torn societies how to reimagine their futures. Examining Northern Ireland, South Africa, and Israel/Palestine, these scholars and their colleagues demonstrate the organizational structure of hope-and the whole world owes them a debt of gratitude for it."

Barbara J. Nelson, Dean, UCLA School of Public Policy and Social Research

"Gidron, Katz and Hasenfeld have edited a volume of extraordinary reach, an extensive and complex series of case studies of peace and conflict resolution organizations in three national arenas. Carefully contexualizing the nature of ethno-racial and socio-political conflict in Northern Ireland, South Africa and Israel-Palestine, they examine the networks among peace advocates and the role of voluntary sector organizations in seeking peace and justice. They grapple in exemplary fashion with cross-national problems of coming to consensus about definitions, research methods, theoretical schemes and the resultant politicization of findings. A major work with enormous implications for students of national and international conflict and for policy-makers and public advocates concerned with conflict resolution and peace-making."

Montanas Wild & Scenic Upper Missouri River
Published in Paperback by Northern Rocky Mountain Books (May, 2002)
Authors: Northern Rocky Mountain Books and Glenn Monahan
Average review score:

Great guidebook based on experience by the authors.
Glenn Monahan's book, Montana's Wild and Scenic Upper Missouri River, 2nd edition, is written clearly and accurately. Lewis and Clark first described this portion of the Missouri in their annals of 1805. Construction of the Fort Peck Dam has changed the course of the river since that date. And one will not see grizzly bear or buffalo as documented by the Expedition in what was then Montana Territory.

For travelers who are canoeing, rafting or exploring outcroppings on foot, Monahan gives a play-by-play of scenic changes and their identification. His historical accounts and pictures satisfy curiosity and bridge a 200-year gap.

Best One-Stop Guidebook for Northern California
As a busy parent of three children, I am always on the look out for new weekend adventures--this book has it all. It gives great history, detail, local color, places and events...even usable local area maps.

With listings by regions, Kim Weir has a succinct novelists eye for what makes Northern California beat. Makes great reading...I keep this large 1000 page pocket book at my nightstand to read colorful stories about places I might someday visit. Equally compact, I then load the book in my car for ready reference to see what's hot whereever we roam.

Written with the insight of Mark Twain, this is an excellent source for anyone wanting to capture the diversity of Northern California at it's greatest. Lot's of fun. Quite readible. Full of nice pictures.

Well worth the $ for the new 2000 edition. Congrats to Moon Press for another winner. Please keep those updates comming.

Mountain Bike! Northern California
Published in Paperback by Menasha Ridge Press (01 June, 2000)
Author: Linda Gong Austin
Average review score:

The best guidebook available
This is by far the best Northern California Mtn Bike guidebook on the market. It is the easiest to use, the most comprehensive, and the most diverse of all the books out there. The book is laid out incredibly well. All of the 100 rides listed are sorted by region, by difficulty, by scenery, and even by whether or not they are family and kid freindly. The maps are detailed enough to give you a good orientation once you arrive at the ride, without being so detailed that you get lost just trying to read it. The written directions provide more detail, and cover virtually everything that you need to know in order to hop on the saddle. Every level and style of rider will be pleasantly surprised by how well this book addresses their specific needs and concerns. So far I've taken 4 of the recommended rides, all of which were exactly as the book promised. This guide is the most used book in our house, and will continue to be until I've exhausted all the rides that I'm interested in. The only thing I haven't been impressed with are the less than spectacular black and white photos. But if you ignore those, this book is a perfect 10.

Murdo's Story: A Legend from Northern Manitoba
Published in Paperback by Pemmican Pubns (June, 1986)
Author: Murdo Scribe
Average review score:

A superb rendering of the Ojibway Origin of Seasons Myth
As a scholar of Ojibway and Cree legends and myths, I am extremely impressed with the accuracy and quality of this picture book version of the Origin of Seasons by an elder with firm roots in traditional storytelling. Unlike other, oversimplified, picture book adaptations of this myth, Murdo Scribe's rendering brings out the complexities of the authentic story. Terry Gallagher's detailed black and white illustrations are delightful. This is a must book for teachers and others wishing to share Native American mythology with children.
